Intro to Goldsmithing
Instructor: John Petet
Prerequisite: Metalsmithing 2 or equivalent
Duration: 15 Hours
In this workshop you will be fabricating two rings and using them to learn the following skills:
- Sizing rings up/down
- Applying desired texture
- Creating a split ring shank
- Making a cabochon bezel setting and cutting your own bezel wire
- Setting the stone
- Professionally polishing the entire piece
Pricing your gold ring and tips on how to buy gold will also be discussed.
Materials supplied by instructor:
- Gold (instructor will be selling to students at his purchase price)*
- 8 or 10ga ½ round 14k yellow gold
- 14k yellow 22ga. Sheet gold
- 14k yellow easy solder
- 14K yellow hard solder
- Binding wire
- Boric acid & methanol
- Batterns flux
*Kit Fees will be paid to the instructor, are in addition to your tuition, and are based on current market prices.
Bring your Metalsmithing toolbox, including the following items:
- Small jar with liquid tight lid
- Optivisor/magnification (#5 or #7)
- 95 ppm dust mask (or the best you can find)
- Ring Mandrel
- Ring bending pliers
- 3rd hand cross locking tweezers & insulated cross locking tweezers
- Titanium solder pick
- Flux brush (#3 sable paint brush)
- Small charcoal block (may be hard or soft)
- Bastard mill file (12 inches long)
- Bench block
- Planishing hammer mirror finish
- Ring clamp
- Rawhide mallet
- 3 sanding sticks
- Sandpaper, 220, 320, 400 & 600 grit
- Finishing wheels (can buy from instructor)
- Needle file set, cut 2
