This fun, fast introduction to the hydraulic press will take your metalsmithing into another dimension … literally! This little hydraulic press is a quick easy way to create three-dimensional forms that can be integrated into your metalwork in myriad ways, using pre-made Plexiglass dies with laser cut shapes. The press is light enough to be portable, yet strong enough to do the job!! Instant gratification!!
The press works well with a variety of thin gauge metals, including copper, brass, silver, gold, even aluminum. The press will form pre-patterned metal without distortion, including etched and roll printed metals. Pressed pieces can be soldered together to create hollow forms, riveted or enameled on top of.
Students will receive excellent instruction of the proper use of the rolling mill and Kathleen will allow students to try a variety of dies including doughnuts, cabochons, birds and vases.
NOTE**Enamelists prefer to work on pressed metal as it adds strength and depth to enamels.
Kathleen Gatliffe is a master at using the Hydraulic Press. She is a very accomplished Enamelist, and is the instructor for DSMA's Enamel Painting Techniques and Enamel Drawing Techniques workshops. www.catsgrin.com. See her Bio under DSMA 'Our Instructors'.
The Naja Tool and Supply also sells laser cut dies. Students will leave class with a wide variety of pressed pieces ready to be incorporated into their future jewelry projects or to enamel onto!!
