Thick wall bezels for cabochons stones are sometimes referred to as a European bezel. This setting technique typically uses from 18 gauge to 22 gauge sterling silver strip and works best for harder, high walled cabochons. In this class you will be using 20 gauge. The project for this workshop is a pendant in sterling silver with a cabochon stone.
Agate and jasper are good stones to learn with. Included in the class is the making of a steel setting punch. The thick bezel is hammered over the stone using the steel punch and a chasing hammer rather than pushing with a bezel pusher. The purpose of this style of setting is a wide appearing bezel and a very secure setting in the finished piece. Bezels for round stones can be made using a ring mandrel or a round bezel mandrel.
