Class Limit: 10
Class Duration: 32 Hours
Explore the rich beauty of Cloisonné Enameling, a rich colorful technique which is thousands of years old!! Learn to develop and expand your artistic skills with renowned enamelist Linda Kay Dartys’ expert guidance.
Linda is coming from Italy to teach us here in Colorado, and we are very honored to host her at The Denver School of Metal Arts in Denver, Colorado. We have been trying to get Linda Darty here since 2013 and are so excited to finally have her here with us! She has limited availability to teach in the USA as she is director of ECU Italy intensive studies abroad program in Tuscany, Italy, where she teaches 7 months of the year.
In this very special Masters workshop, students will learn effective techniques for shading with transparent color on small jewelry scale pieces of copper or fine silver. We will learn the fundamentals of cloisonné enameling with a focus on blending transparent and opalescent enamel colors to achieve value gradations, luminosity and amazing depth. Linda will walk students through the proper way to use foils beneath colors, how to create a lustrous matte or gloss finish, and she will discuss setting options for enameling.
Students should expect to complete several small cloisonné pieces and samples, investigating cloisonné and wet inlay during this exciting enameling workshop.
Linda will be giving a lecture and Q and A about the advantages and disadvantages of leaded vs. non-leaded enamels with color samples and jewelry photographs. Leaded enamels on silver afford more color options, especially in the warmer tones. Students will see the difference and have the option of buying leaded enamels in a color kit in class from Linda. Otherwise, students can use their own leaded or unleaded enamels.
**Enamel safety will be taught and practiced.
This workshop is for beginners, as well as those with enamel experience. Students will work at their particular skill level, applying Linda’s techniques to create colorful jewelry components that will enhance any design style.
